About the Winery
The pursuit of fine wine requires an understanding of the vineyards
from which grapes are sourced, a respect for the hand that nature
deals us each vintage, and an understanding of how best to highlight
natural terroir through minimal handling and other fermentation
techniques in the cellar. At Peter Paul, we bring in California
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Pacific-cooled Russian River
Valley. We also harvest Cabernet Sauvignon in California's eponymous
Napa Valley. And we make a very small amount of Oregon Pinot Noir
as well.
Each vineyard source has its own distinct character that requires
special attention in the field as well as in the cellar. We barrel
ferment our Chardonnay to best integrate plush fruit with toasty
oak. Pinot Noir is punched down in open-top tanks by hand in a traditional
Burgundian manner. Our Cabernet is gently crushed and then pumped
over to maintain a firm, yet elegant, tannin structure. Barrel aging
for all our wines occurs exclusively in French oak.
However, the goal is not to mask in wood what the vineyard produces
in flavor. Winemakers, Daniel Moore and Jeff Morgan, use time-honored
methods in a modern tradition to bring each wine to fruition at
its own speed. The resulting wines show elegant structure, yet don't
hold back on flavor. Ultimately, the results can best be appreciated
in your glass.
The following Peter Paul wines are available in Connecticut:
2008 Russian River Valley Chardonnay
Our Chardonnay is blended from select coastal Russian River Valley
vineyards, including the renowned Bacigalupi Vineyard off West Side
Road. (This vineyard was part of the blend that won the famous Paris
Tasting of 1976.)
Richly textured, smooth, plush and brimming with flavor, Peter
Paul Chardonnay is sourced from a singularly famous vineyard with
great pedigree. It serves up plenty of pear, apricot and other stone
fruit flavors, is backed by firm acidity and framed in toasty, sweet
oak with hints of vanilla and spice.
2008 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
A blend of two fine Russian River vineyards (Bacigalupi and Dunah),
this elegantly styled Pinot Noir offers mounds of classic cherry
notes up front. They are followed by more subtle hints of plum,
toast and a touch of sage. A judicious use of oak blends well with
the modest, refined tannins and acidity that give excellent structure.
2008 Russian River Valley Mill Station
Road Pinot Noir
This single vineyard Pinot Noir is produced from grapes grown on
an exceptional site located above the Atascadero/Green Valley watershed.
The vineyard is located in one of the coolest parts of the Russian
River Valley, and it is farmed by the Dutton brothers.
This single vineyard designate is showing a deep, multi-layered
core of complex flavors redolent of black cherry, plum, spice, vanilla
and herbs. Silky tannins provide a fine framework, while balanced
acidity offers excellent focus on the palate. The wine finishes
long and luxuriously.
2005 Serracino Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel
A single-vineyard Zinfandel produced from 80-year-old vines grown
by the Serracino Family in Northern Californias Dry Creek
Valley. Elegantly styled, it sports a core of black cherry and cassis,
followed by hints of clove, black pepper and anise. Finishes with
toasty vanilla!
2004 Peter Paul Napa Valley DIAMOND MOUNTAIN
Cabernet - AVAILABLE - LIMITED
WOW.
This extremely limited production wine-only 200 cases made-is sourced
from grapes grown at the renowned Constant Vineyard at the top of
Diamond Mountain, in Napa Valley. Iron-rich, well drained red soil
marks this pristine location and offers Cabernet grapes excellent
opportunity to reach optimum ripeness while maintaining the unique
character of the appellation. We gently crushed the grapes, cool-fermented
them, and then barreled down only the free-run wine for this exceptional
cuvée, which serves up silky-smooth tannins framing cassis,
blackberry, anise, vanilla, toast and herb flavors.
